In 2023, construction began on Lorain County's newest county road, Sandstone Parkway. Sandstone Parkway will be the first new county road built within the last 100 years. Upon completion, Sandstone Parkway will measure 1.32 miles long, connecting Oberlin Road and State Route 58, just south of the Ohio Turnpike.
Phase 1 construction includes building 0.69 miles of pavement from Oberlin Road with curb and gutter, all new utilities (sanitary and storm sewers, water main, gas, electric), and a sanitary pump station. This phase also includes intersections that will lead into adjacent housing developments, multiple detention basins, and a shared use path. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the Summer of 2024.
Phase 2 of Sandstone Parkway is anticipated to begin in late spring or early summer of 2024. This phase will include all new utilities (sanitary and storm sewers, water main, gas, electric), the remaining 0.63 miles of new pavement, curb and gutter, detention basins, and a roundabout. The roundabout will be located approximately 500 feet from State Route 58, and will provide access to additional residential developments. Commercial lots, which will be located along State Route 8 and the turnpike, will also have access to this phase of the Parkway.
The value of the Sandstone Parkway publicly bid construction contracts alone (Phases 1 and 2) is anticipated to exceed $10,000,000. In addition to the administration of these projects, The Lorain County Engineer's office is also dedicating resources to the review and inspection of the adjacent residential and commercial developments to ensure that construction adheres to Lorain County Standards. The Lorain County Engineer's office, the County Commissioners and their administration staff, as well as private developers, are involved and heavily invested into this project, as it will have a large impact on Amherst Township and the surrounding areas. A project of this magnitude takes a lot of coordination to successfully complete, and its completion would not be possible without the staff of the Lorain County Engineer's Office.
